Wick's Pug 406 MOT repairs.

Fails:
  • O/S/R suspension-arm link bar - rubber bush split.
  • N/S/R tyre - less than 1.6mm tread.
  • Major exhaust leak.
  • Emissions too high.
  • Number-plate light not working.
  • Centre rear seatbelt won't retract.

The number-plate light was just a loose bulb, the bulb was ok to reuse and the rear centre seatbelt was merely jammed on the plastic feeder. so they cost nothing. Neither did the N/S/R tyre, as they can only check that tyre on a partial re-test, so I just swapped the wheel for the one with the most tread. I replaced both rear link bars, they were £16.75 for the pair through T&S. The exhaust leak turned out to be where the pipe exits the centre-silencer due to it only being connected at the manifold and the rearmost bracket causing the whole exhaust to sag in the middle until metal fatigue took over. I used a thin stainless-steel strap to lift the exhaust in the middle and went a bit further than horizontal to press the broken part of the collar harder together and close the gap. An angled metal bandage and an entire tube of Holts Gun Gum sealed the break nicely. The main problem was the emissions being too high, so I changed the oil and put a bottle of Wynn's Stop-Smoke 'Anti Humos' in with it. Wick then put an entire bottle of Wynn's 'Clean Burn' emissions reducer in on the day of the test, with just £30 worth of diesel. The car passed with flying colours.
